I am a husband and father of a 10 year old son. Yes, I know we can do all of these things and not be Amish or Mennonite, but there is something deeply spiritual about their lifestyle and the rules they live by, and that spirituality has a way of making its way through those who live the lifestyle and choose to write about it, or those who have been exposed to the lifestyle and feel the urge to educate outsider about just how backward THEIR lifestyle is.

Plain and Simple: A Woman's Journey to the Amish

Even reading about the Amish over the last week has inspired me to get my family and I out into degree weather and FIX our garden. Well said Tom! I think no matter where you are at life….. Get rid of all the junk and get back to some basics. I love that you took your family out to the garden.

Foster those moments with your child, spending time together is what will grow heart strings to them and that is more than anything you could ever buy. I want to thank you for sharing your story. I actually teared up reading about your desire for a plain lifestyle. I have yearned for such a lifestyle for all of my life my dream was to live on a farm with the Ingalls from Little House On The Prairie.

Thank you. Oh that blesses my heart. Plain and simple. Have a wonderful blessed day! Hello there, I just wanted to say that our stories are very similar. I too was searching for people who felt as I did about being a keeper at home and living a plainer life. Living in Australia, there is no one of who I have like minded fellowship with.

But I follow the plain way regardless, and love my simple lifestyle. Thank you for your story. I knew exactly where you were coming from. Love Julie xx.

I am very happy that we connected Julie! It is a blessing following the path that the Lord has for you—whatever that may be. Have a blessed day! Really enjoyed your article. I am always looking for ways to simplify my life, am so tired of thinking that I must keep up with the world. Time to clean out the clutter and things not necessary in life.

All ideas would be helpful. Is it just electricity that sets the faith apart from the Amish? Maybe I should research your faith a bit further. Had to smile at your comment: I believe that all the different branches of the Amish churches do things differently. Some shun—in their own special way: We are all different, but if we can have one common belief—in the Lord, then that is great! I am a Pentecostal woman at heart. I respect a lot of their teachings and still continue many of them. But my first line of seeking is after God and His direction:. I Love hearing your journey!!! Me and my family have been working towards a more simple life for years now.

We are drawn to the Amish way of living and one day would love to move to shipshewana, Indiana and live amongst their simple lifestyle. I long for the simplest lifestyle for me and my family. Your welcome. I have learned that you can be plain and simple within your heart and that will flow out with all that you do. Be blessed:. I have a question.. We go to a simple home church with no real religion just plain people. But my mods are friends with many ho.

What is your advise, when best friends go all the time. We want joyful hearts.

Plain and Simple A Journey to the Amish Ohio, Sue Bender. (Paperback ) Book Reviews,

This is a tough one to answer. I have been in both situations before. Where I was very stern in my thoughts to not let them go and then in my leniency to let them go. How do you find that balance. In our family, not letting them go to anything…led to rebellion. Just letting them do what they wanted…leads to rebellion. You need to be set on your convictions first. We got together with other families, we did gatherings at our house, we did stuff with other teens…otherwise they are going to want to get out: in my opinion. We talk a lot about things and I like the teachers and leaders for teaching principles.

We then started a homeschool group and it took years before we got more teen age girls, but now we do. Right now my daughter found a bible study group, that is completely not connected with our denomination or kind at all…but it has been a great source of godly encouragement.

You have to find something for them to do otherwise they feel like they are left out and that leads to rebelling. We nurture their hearts instead of being blunt.

I hope this has been a good explanation….. Thank you..

Out oldest went to. So now we are under the second chikd wanting youth and he has went some to one , the other one amny kids go to and there is many clicks and such and its farther away. She finds her footing again before the end however, and overall I recommend this book for at least a lovely and comfortable read, if not as a necessity for your private collection. The wood gleamed with vitality. Bender is a strong writer and she has some good points to make. In the forgetting we miss something important about the climb, the struggle, the loss of life, the loss of dreams. I kept hoping she would share something! Photo credit Nancy Rubin.

We only have 7 children but we try to keep a happy home full of fun but we also know they like to break away too. We just started meeting with a new homeschool group they have come and gone through the years. Seems here many kid wont hang with you if your not at the right youth group , and some youth grpups want ypour kids all weekend long for different events it becomes no family time. So we are trying to see what fits for us and some grouos preach that as loing as we have gods grace we can basically do whatever we want , watch whatever, have blue hair , tatoo, peirce whatever ,etc.

So it becomes hard. Hard to kniw if we shoukd allow them to be with bkue haired christians or not hahaha we teach them to love everyine and not judge , but hard to put them with them and then have to weed out what we feel blesses the lord. If you know what i mean. Tryi g to find a place that has friends they like with moral we like is complicated hahaha but we are trying. Thank you for the great response. I completely understand, we have been there and done that.

Just found this and loved it!

My husband and I are going back to basics. We are working toward my husband coming home to stay, to get out of the time clock lifestyle. We garden and preserve. We raise chickens for eggs and meat. We are praying for dairy goats and meat rabbits. We are using, reusing, and repurposing as much as possible.

God also placed on my heart to wear skirts and headcoverings. However, since I made that lifestyle change I feel much more free than ever before. We are tired of the rat race, selfishness, greediness, entitledness of the world.

We are older, we have grandchildren, making these changes.
